Story 5: Kitchen and Greatroom Remodel

The clients had purchased the residence with the intention to update; add on a four season sunroom; and modify the existing structure to suit their contemporary styling. The project included extensive remodeling in the kitchen, great room, and master bath; the addition of a post and beam sunroom; new finishes in the remaining areas of the house; and exterior paint finishes.

The contemporary kitchen has stainless steel countertops around the perimeter with Absolute Black Wirebrushed granite on the island top. The birch panel doors next to the refrigerator conceal a walk in pantry and a separate area for an audio closet.

In the master bath area, the clients selected a jetted cast iron tub. Because the tub was big enough to accommodate two bathers, the live load was extremely heavy and the floor required shoring. Additionally the clients wanted to integrate a sliding shoji styled screen system to separate the tub area from the rest of the room. The slate and wood combination on the tub walls is consistent with the rest of the home.

Wishing to transition and join the indoor and outdoor living spaces, the clients requested a sunroom. A post and beam styled solarium measuring 23’ x 19’ was constructed on the home’s backside.

Throughout the main living room the existing exposed rough cedar beams were dark and heavy. The beams were wrapped with birch plywood. By using birch veneer plywood and an edge veneer we were able to keep the cost down and make it more acceptable to their budget rather than using maple stock. The painters then stained all of the birch plywood to blend with the maple cabinets.

For the remaining bedrooms and dining room the clients selected new flooring and painting finishes.

Feeling their goals were accomplished, our clients were very pleased with the outcome of their home. The finished spaces exceeded their original plans…they admit that their project was more “build-design” because they continually saw more potential as the project progressed. Each space in their residence has taken on a new identity…their living room has become an area to enjoy playing and listening to music, their solarium is their “at one with nature” space, the master bath suite is their place to relax at the end of a long stressful day, and the kitchen’s expansive countertops provide plenty of room to prepare special meals and holiday cookies!

When purchasing the home, the owners knew it had the structure they were looking for, even though it was outdated and did not suit their contemporary style. A wall between the great room and kitchen was removed to unify the two spaces. The kitchen received modern finishes with a wooden wall concealing a walk in pantry and an additional audio closet. A post and beam styled 23’ x 19’ solarium was added to the backside of the kitchen and great room to increase the homeowner’s feel of the outdoors. The large two person cast iron tub for the master bath required additional floor framing to accommodate the weight. There was a wall removed from the bathroom to implement a shoji screen wall system. The slate and wood combination on the tub walls is consistent with the rest of the home.
