The homeowners of this traditionally styled home originally were dissatisfied with the dark wood paneled walls in their family room. They also felt the room did not allow for comfortable furniture placement. Other unrealized issues surfaced…the placement of the bar area didn’t work for guests and parties – it had become a place to hide toys; the window locations were awkward.
The clients decided to enlarge the family room with an addition that has appropriate size and shape to allow for seating groupings…one to watch the television and another to enjoy conversation or a song from the piano. A window seat offers natural lighting while concealing the children’s toys. Built in cabinetry house electronic equipment and keep it neatly tucked out of the way. The project also encompassed the living room area by enlarging a window and new interior finishes. The bar was relocated to facilitate a nice flow between the kitchen and family room. The addition has complemented the family’s lifestyle…this larger space has played a gracious host to a 14 girl slumber party! The parquet hardwood flooring in the foyer is shining and has surpassed it’s original beauty through refinishing efforts!
Upstairs the clients wanted assistance with their furniture as well. It was time for a changing of the guard…both the master bedroom and bath needed updating. Since the addition idea had been approved for the main floor, the homeowners decided they “may as well go up” and design a new bath suite. The former bath and closet area was re-dedicated as strictly closet and the new square footage on the second floor provided plenty of space for an elegant bath. Each of the homeowners had goals for the project…hers was a luxurious spa tub carefully selected to embrace a weary body after a full day of work and domestic duties. Another feature the clients were glad to have incorporated is the electrically heated floor system under the beautiful Ambria Fiorito marble tiles. On chilly winter mornings the floor efficiently warms bare feet – fresh out of the shower! Back in the bedroom, beautiful custom built-in bookcases and columns (all constructed on site) lend a pleasant visual element while also functioning as a room divider between the sleeping area and the service areas.
The interior finishes were carefully selected throughout the residence to create beauty, comfort, and serve functionally. Graceful crown moulding and trim work around the doors and windows carry a formal feel in the spaces, but are softened by the paint, furniture and carpet finishes.
Exterior issues were paramount. The homeowners required the addition to melt into the original home so it would appear as if it had always been part of the building. To achieve this, the team cautiously reviewed and selected brick and siding finishes matching the existing materials. The clients are thrilled with their home’s appearance.
Overall, the homeowners admit to being extremely pleased with the finished project. Their physical and aesthetic problems were solved beyond their expectations. This home’s thoughtful design and expert craftsmanship will comfortably serve the entire family for years to come.
