Story 1: Basement Wine Cellar, Cigar Lounge, Exercise Room and Powder Room

Basement Wine Cellar, Cigar Lounge, Exercise Room and Powder Room thumbnail images

This venture provided something of interest for both of the homeowners. While they are wine enthusiasts and wanted their own wine cellar, it also provided a place to smoke cigars and drink Cognac for him, while providing her with an exercise room complete with mirrored walls and a 42” flat panel television.

To accommodate flat ceilings we removed all existing ductwork to the first floor and designed a new system to keep from creating soffits out in the open areas. By installing an in-line blower motor at the end of the ductwork run for the exhaust system in the cigar lounge, we were able to keep the sound of the system low enough that the occupants can enjoy using the room while the system is running.

This project took an unfinished basement with low ceilings previously used for storage and transformed it into a wine cellar for 2,064 bottles, a cigar lounge, exercise room and a full bath. We utilized custom made doors and book shelves, a wood and brick paver floor and reclaimed rough sewn ceiling beams to gain an “old world cellar” feeling. The clients regularly use each space and take pleasure in the function of the rooms.

Our clients wanted to turn their unfinished basement into multi-functional areas with an “old world cellar” appeal. The wood and brick paver floor integrates well with the reclaimed rough sewn ceiling beams in the lounge area and the beadboard ceilings in the hallway. Custom made doors and bookshelves add to the old world ambiance. The new space satisfies all their desires as a couple and as individuals. They now have dedicated spaces to store their wine collection; he has a lounge to enjoy smoking cigars and drinking Cognac, complete with an exhaust system to rid the lounge of unwanted smoke and odor; and she has an area to exercise without distractions. A full bath completes the renovation.
